Development of Health Care - Essay Example In Elizabethan times, parishes had to bear with the responsibility of taking care of the poor living in the community (Liverpool Echo 2009). The poor in those days could benefit from "outdoor relief" in the form of food, clothing and fuel. However, with an unwieldy appreciation in the poor population, the parishes decided to withdraw this already insufficient outdoor relief and started resorting to "indoor relief" in the guise of hell like workhouses that required the less miserable amongst the poor lot of Britain to bear with inhuman work conditions in lieu of a pitiable yet indispensable sustenance (Liverpool Echo 2009). However, the things got worst at the start of the 19th century, which led to the introduction of Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834. Zillions of workhouses came up all across the UK. Poor Relief reduced to a shameful pittance accessible only to those who were willing to opt for exploitative workhouses instead of a hapless existence. The life in such workhouses was far from being bearable and homely. Comfort was an elusive pie in the sky that was far beyond the reach of even the relatively well to do poor. In fact, the possibility of affiliating to some workhouse was a perpetual fear that haunted the deprived families huddled in the slums to bear with their hopeless existence. Workhouse records and Census returns do elaborately testify to the miserable lot of the poor in the 19th century. Workhouses were a dreaded place divested of all hope and future. The moving spirit behind these workhouses was to keep the living standards of the inmates much below that of the lowest paid labourer. The poor had to bear with subhuman rules and norms, which made their lives frustratingly monotonous (Hull Daily Mail 2007). They ha d to carry their pitiable status with them in the guise of grey tweed suits and blue and white striped dresses (Hull Daily Mail 2007). A harsh policy of gender segregation went to the extent of separating even married couples and siblings.Homelessness and abject poverty appropriated within their scope a plethora of health problems. The life expectancy amongst the workhouse residents was very low and they exhibited some of the highest death rates in the UK. The poor huddled in the workhouses were four times more prone to accidents and thirty five times more likely to commit suicide (Herald Express 2008). Chest and skin infections, gastrointestinal troubles, poor circulation, compromised dental hygiene, anaemia, and visual and nutritional problems perpetually defined the life at a workhouse (Herald Express 2008).Yet, the biggest eliminator tended to be the extreme mental and emotional turmoil that the poor in Britain had to cope up with in these workhouses. The senseless and absurd pr actice of classifying the poor by the criteria of 'deserving poor' and the 'undeserving poor' added insult to injury. The 'deserving' being those who were too old or infirm to work while the 'undeserving' being wandering beggars and destitute. The principle of less eligibility smacked of a festering annoyance and intolerability in the society and the state that intended to keep the unemployed deliberately poor; and vulnerable to or rather forced to taking jobs for which they were essentially unqualified or averse to (Baggot 2004). Psychosis Leads to Murder Essay Throughout In Cold Blood, Truman Capote writes on the events directly before, during, and the happenings after the brutal murdering of the Clutter family in the quaint town of Holcomb, Kansas. The actions Dick Hickock and Perry Smith attracted Capote and led him to ultimately report on the entire ordeal. Throughout Capoteââ¬â¢s masterpiece, In Cold Blood, Hickock and Smithââ¬â¢s deranged and psychotic actions directly correlate to a deep psychosis they both suffered for multiple years. Throughout the novel, In Cold Blood, the two murderers, Dick Hickock and Perry Smith, show instances of unwarranted anger and aggression that leads readers into believing that a serious issue with their psyches have occurred. Early in, the novel Hickock states, ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t want to harm the man. I thought he was a very nice gentleman. Soft-spoken. I thought so right up to the moment I cut his throatâ⬠(Capote 88). Here, the reader can clearly see Hickock contradicting himself but in in a rather frightening way. Smith also shows an instance of this as well later in the novel when he says, ââ¬Å"I wish sheââ¬â¢d been in that house that night. What a sweet scene!â⬠(Capote 259). When Smith says ââ¬Ësheââ¬â¢ in the previous, quote he is referring to his own sister. He vocalizes that he wishes his sister was among the Clutters in their house the night he and Dick killed them. This allows the reader to truly gage the depth of his psychosis by not even allowing himself to show any compassion to his own family. In Brian Conniffââ¬â¢s article ââ¬Å"Psychological Accidents: In Cold Blood and Ritual Sacrifice,â⬠he agrees with the previous thought by stating, ââ¬Å"Hickock was the one with the ââ¬Ësexual intrest in female childrenââ¬â¢ who wants to stop, in the middle of the burglary, to rape Nancy Clutter,â⬠a direct quote from Smith (5). Furnished from Capoteââ¬â¢ s personal accounts, it allows the reader to see further into the extreme violence of the convicted felons. Aside from unwarranted anger and aggression, both, Hickock and Smith show a magnitude of signs that allow outsiders to infer that they, themselves, know of their mental condition and knowingly choose to ignore it. In many instances they vocalize this to each other and even to complete strangers. Shortly after the murders Smith said, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦The kind of psychotic rage it took to commit such a crimeâ⬠(Capote 83). And Hickock mentioned, ââ¬Å"I think there must be something seriously wrong with us to do what we didâ⬠(Capote 108). The context of these two quotes makes it quite easy to understand why readers believe that Hickock and Smith knew of their mental issues prior to the murders but both decided to ignore them. In Conniffââ¬â¢s article ââ¬Å"Psychological Accidents: In Cold Blood and Ritual Sacrifice,â⬠he agrees with the idea above by stating a written portion of an interview with Hickock done by Capote that reads, ââ¬Å"Like all of the rest of the ââ¬Ënormals,ââ¬â¢ as Perry calls themââ¬âââ¬Ërespectable people, safe and smug peopleââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (3). This is yet another solid acknowledgement of his insanity, which he chooses to blatantly ignore. Throughout the entire novel, Hickock and Smith both suffer seriously from psychotic delusions and emotional rants, which forces readers to perceive Hickock and Smith as mentally insane men. During one of these rants Smith exclaims, ââ¬Å"I WANT TO CONESS!â⬠(Capote 100). Hickock also shows multiple instances of emotional rants also. One of many comes when his sister says she will not contact him and he, overrun by emotion, states, ââ¬Å"I wish sheââ¬â¢d been in that house that night. What a sweet scene!â⬠(Capote 259). And also, ââ¬Å"I wouldnââ¬â¢t give a damn if this car caught fire and burned me aliveâ⬠(Capote 188). Both these quotes appear while suffering severe shifts in emotions, which he could not control, thus proving his mental instability. After authorities caught the two, and while being questioned Smith stated, ââ¬Å"It was part passion- a passion that was pathological,â⬠meaning that he could not control himself (Capote 186). Small indications, such as these, allow readers to see deep into the psyche of Hickock and Smith, displaying disturbing images. Throughout unwarranted acts of anger and aggression, Hickock and Smithââ¬â¢s acknowledgement of their insanity, and the delusions and rants they experience directly correlation between their acts of horror and the deep psychosis they became trapped in late in their lives. This psychosis directly relates to why they did the terrible things they did, and why they didnââ¬â¢t think anything of it. The Go-Getter :: essays research papers
The Go-Getter is a story about one manââ¬â¢s drive and persistence. William E. Peck is his name and he is an ex-soldier who was injured in battle. Bill lost one of his arms and had one of his legs shortened because of a gunshot wound. But the story begins as the Ricks & Logging Company is looking for a man who can take over managerial responsibilities in their Shanghai office. The two previous managers have had alcohol problems and have not lived up to their responsibilities. So the company is looking for a replacement. First off, Cappy Ricks and Mr. Skinner are set on a Mr. Andrews taking the job in Shanghai. But in walks this gimpy one-armed man into Mr. Ricksââ¬â¢ office and wowââ¬â¢s him with his powerful ability to sell himself, Bill Peck. Bill had met with several other people in the company and they did not give him a chance. But he wouldnââ¬â¢t quit and went straight to the top and achieved what he was looking for, and got his chance. Early in Billââ¬â¢s job, he does surprisingly well. The top dogs at the company think that Bill just may be the man to take over the Shanghai office instead of Mr. Andrews. But he would have to pass one test. Cappy sends Bill out to pick up a blue vase and deliver it back to Cappy by a certain time and place. What Bill doesnââ¬â¢t know is that Cappy sets obstacles to make the task almost impossible. Bill succeeds in this mission to the surprise of Cappy. Bill is only the second person out of fifteen to actually complete the mission. Bill is ultimately offered the job to take over the Shanghai office. At my internship, my supervisor in working the cameras at WICU has not exemplified the same managerial style and qualities as Cappy Ricks. Heââ¬â¢s just not that mean, in the sense of sending me out on a bogus story or on a wild goose chase. But he does have confidence in me to shoot what I think is appropriate. His confidence in me does work, because if he would always shoot a story or scene, then how could I learn. Iââ¬â¢m not really sure if Iââ¬â¢m beneficial to the station because I am only an intern. But there is a little over a month left, so maybe in time Iââ¬â¢ll be beneficial to the station.

The Lost Duke of Wyndham Chapter Twenty
Outside the carriage, the atmosphere was considerably less tense. The three men remained on horseback, never quite in a line. Every now and then one of them would increase his pace or fall behind, and one horse would pass another. Perfunctory greetings would be exchanged. Occasionally someone would comment on the weather. Lord Crowland seemed rather interested in the native birds. Thomas didn't say much, but ââ¬â Jack glanced over at him ââ¬â good Lord, was he whistling? ââ¬Å"Are you happy?â⬠Jack asked, his voice a bit short. Thomas looked back in surprise. ââ¬Å"Me?â⬠He frowned, thinking about it. ââ¬Å"I suppose I am. It's a rather fine day, don't you think?â⬠ââ¬Å"A fine day,â⬠Jack echoed. ââ¬Å"None of us is trapped in the carriage with that evil old hag,â⬠Crowland announced. ââ¬Å"We should all be happy.â⬠Then he added, ââ¬Å"Pardon,â⬠since the evil old hag was, after all, grandmother to both of his companions. ââ¬Å"Pardons unnecessary on my account,â⬠Thomas said. ââ¬Å"I agree with your assessment completely.â⬠There had to be something significant in this, Jack thought ââ¬â that their conversation kept returning to how relieved they all were not to be in the dowager's presence. It was damned strange, to tell the truth, and yet, it did make one thinkâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å"Will I have to live with her?â⬠he blurted out. Thomas looked over and grinned. ââ¬Å"The Outer Hebrides, my man, the Outer Hebrides.â⬠ââ¬Å"Why didn't you do it?â⬠Jack demanded. ââ¬Å"Oh, believe me, I will, on the off chance I still possess any power over her tomorrow. And if I don'tâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Thomas shrugged. ââ¬Å"I'll need some sort of employment, won't I? I always wished to travel. Perhaps I shall be your scout. I'll find the oldest, coldest place on the island. I shall have a rollicking good time.â⬠ââ¬Å"For God's sake,â⬠Jack swore. ââ¬Å"Stop talking like that.â⬠He did not want this to be preordained. He did not want it to be understood. Thomas ought to be fighting for his place in the world, not blithely handing it over. Because he himself did not want it. He wanted Grace, and he wanted his freedom, and more than anything, right at that very moment, he wanted to be somewhere else. Anywhere else. Thomas gave him a curious look but said nothing more. And neither did Jack. Not when they reached Pollamore, or Cavan town, or even as they rode into Butlersbridge. Night had long since fallen, but Jack knew every storefront, every last signpost and tree. There was the Derragarra Inn, where he'd got himself drunk on his seventeenth birthday. There was the butcher, and the blacksmith, and ah, yes, there was the oatmeal mill, behind which he'd stolen his first kiss. Which meant that in five ââ¬â no, make that four ââ¬â more minutes, he would be home. Home. It was a word he had not uttered in years. It had had no meaning. He'd lived in inns and public houses and sometimes under the stars. He'd had his ragtag group of friends, but they drifted in and out of togetherness. They thieved together more by convenience than anything else. All they'd had in common was a shared past in the military, and a willingness to give a portion of their bounty to those who had returned from the war less fortunate than they. Over the years, Jack had given money to men without legs, women without husbands, children without parents. No one ever questioned where he'd got the money. He supposed his bearing and accent were those of a gentleman, and that was enough. People saw what they wanted to see, and when a former officer (who never quite got around to sharing his name) came bearing giftsâ⬠¦ No one ever wanted to question it. And through all this, he'd told no one. Who had there been to tell? Grace. Now there was Grace. He smiled. She would approve. Perhaps not of the means, but certainly of the end. The truth was, he'd never taken anything from anyone who hadn't looked as if they could afford it. And he'd always been careful to more thoroughly rob the most annoying of his victims. Such scruples would not have kept him from the gallows, but it had always made him feel a bit better about his chosen profession. He heard a horse draw up next to his, and when he turned, there was Thomas, now keeping pace beside him. ââ¬Å"Is this the road?â⬠he asked quietly. Jack nodded. ââ¬Å"Just around the bend.â⬠ââ¬Å"They are not expecting you, are they?â⬠ââ¬Å"No.â⬠Thomas had far too much tact to question him further, and indeed, he allowed his mount to fall back by half a length, granting Jack his privacy. And then there it was. Cloverhill. Just as he'd remembered it, except maybe the vines had taken over a bit more of the brick facade. The rooms were lit, and the windows shone with warmth. And even though the only sounds were those made by the traveling party, Jack could swear he could hear laughter and merriment seeping out through the walls. Dear God, he'd thought he'd missed it, but thisâ⬠¦ This was something more. This was an ache, a true, pounding pain in his chest; an empty hole; a sob, forever caught in his throat. This was home. Jack wanted to stop, to take a moment to gaze at the graceful old house, but he heard the carriage drawing closer and knew that he could not keep everyone at bay while he indulged his own nostalgia. The last thing he wanted was for the dowager to barge in ahead of him (which he was quite certain she would do), so he rode up to the entrance, dismounted, and walked up the steps on his own. He closed his eyes and drew a long breath, and then, since he wasn't likely to amass any more courage in the next few minutes, he lifted the brass knocker and brought it down. There was no immediate reply. This was not a surprise. It was late. They were unexpected. The butler might have retired for the night. There were so many reasons they should have got rooms in the village and made their way to Cloverhill in the morning. He didn't want ââ¬â The door opened. Jack held his hands tightly behind his back. He'd tried leaving them at his sides, but they started to shake. He saw the light of the candle first, and then the man behind it, wrinkled and stooped. ââ¬Å"Master Jack?â⬠Jack swallowed. ââ¬Å"Wimpole,â⬠he said. Good heavens, the old butler must be nearing eighty, but of course his aunt would have kept him on, for as long as he wished to work, which, knowing Wimpole, would be until the day he died. ââ¬Å"We were not expecting you,â⬠Wimpole said. Jack tried for a smile. ââ¬Å"Well, you know how I like a surprise.â⬠ââ¬Å"Come in! Come in! Oh, Master Jack, Mrs. Audley will be so pleased to see you. As will ââ¬â â⬠Wimpole stopped, peering out the door, his wizened old eyes creasing into a squint. ââ¬Å"I am afraid that I brought a few guests,â⬠Jack explained. The dowager had already been helped down from the carriage, and Grace and Amelia were right behind her. Thomas had grabbed onto his grandmother's arm ââ¬â hard, from the looks of it ââ¬â to give Jack a few moments alone, but the dowager was already showing signs of impending outrage. ââ¬Å"Wimpole?â⬠came a feminine voice. ââ¬Å"Who is here at this hour?â⬠Jack stood stiffly, hardly able to breathe. It was his aunt Mary. She sounded exactly the same. It was as if he'd never leftâ⬠¦ Except it wasn't. If he'd never left, his heart wouldn't be pounding, his mouth wouldn't be dry. And most of all, he wouldn't feel so bloody terrified. Scared spitless at seeing the one person who had loved him his entire life, with her whole heart and without condition. ââ¬Å"Wimpole? I ââ¬â â⬠She'd rounded the corner and was staring at him like a ghost. ââ¬Å"Jack?â⬠ââ¬Å"In the flesh.â⬠He tried for a jovial tone but couldn't quite manage it, and deep inside, down where he kept his blackest moments, he wanted to cry. Right there, in front of everyone, it was twisting and writhing inside of him, bursting to get out. ââ¬Å"Jack!â⬠she cried out, and she hurled herself forward, throwing her arms around him. ââ¬Å"Oh, Jack. Jack, my dear sweet boy. We've missed you so.â⬠She was covering his face with kisses, like a mother would her son. Like she should have been able to do for Arthur. ââ¬Å"It is good to see you, Aunt Mary,â⬠he said. He pulled her tight then and buried his face in the crook of her neck, because she was his mother, in every way that mattered. And he'd missed her. By God, he'd missed her, and in that moment it did not matter that he'd hurt her in the worst way imaginable. He just wanted to be held. ââ¬Å"Oh, Jack,â⬠she said, smiling through her tears, ââ¬Å"I ought to horsewhip you for staying away so long. Why would you do such a thing? Don't you know how worried we were? How ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Ahem.â⬠Mary stopped and turned, still holding Jack's face in her hands. The dowager had made her way to the front entrance and was standing behind him on the stone steps. ââ¬Å"You must be the aunt,â⬠she said. Mary just stared at her. ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠she finally replied. ââ¬Å"And you areâ⬠¦?â⬠ââ¬Å"Aunt Mary,â⬠Jack said hastily, before the dowager could speak again, ââ¬Å"I am afraid I must introduce you to the dowager Duchess of Wyndham.â⬠Mary let go of him and curtsied, stepping aside as the dowager swept past her. ââ¬Å"The Duchess of Wyndham?â⬠she echoed, looking at Jack with palpable shock. ââ¬Å"Good heavens, Jack, couldn't you have sent notice?â⬠Jack smiled tightly. ââ¬Å"It is better this way, I assure you.â⬠The rest of the traveling party came forward at that moment, and Jack completed the introductions, trying not to notice his aunt going from paler to palest after he identified the Duke of Wyndham and the Earl of Crowland. ââ¬Å"Jack,â⬠she whispered frantically, ââ¬Å"I haven't the rooms. We have nothing grand enough ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Please, Mrs. Audley,â⬠Thomas said with a deferential bow, ââ¬Å"do not put yourself out on my accord. It was unforgivable for us to arrive without notice. I would not expect you to go to any great lengths. Althoughâ⬠ââ¬â he glanced over at the dowager, who was standing in the hall with a sour look on her face ââ¬â ââ¬Å"perhaps your finest room for my grandmother. It will be easier for everyone.â⬠ââ¬Å"Of course,â⬠Mary said quickly. ââ¬Å"Please, please, it's chilly. You must all come inside. Jack, I do need to tell you ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Where is your church?â⬠the dowager demanded. ââ¬Å"Our church?â⬠Mary asked, looking to Jack in confusion. ââ¬Å"At this hour?â⬠ââ¬Å"I do not intend to worship,â⬠the dowager snapped. ââ¬Å"I wish to inspect the records.â⬠ââ¬Å"Does Vicar Beveridge still preside?â⬠Jack asked, trying to cut the dowager off. ââ¬Å"Yes, but he will surely be abed. It's half nine, I should think, and he is an early riser. Perhaps in the morning. I ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"This is a matter of dynastic importance,â⬠the dowager cut in. ââ¬Å"I don't care if it's after midnight. We ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"I care,â⬠Jack cut in, silencing her with an icy expression. ââ¬Å"You are not going to pull the vicar out of bed. You have waited this long. You can bloody well wait until morning.â⬠ââ¬Å"Jack!â⬠Mary gasped. She turned to the dowager. ââ¬Å"I did not raise him to speak this way.â⬠ââ¬Å"No, you didn't,â⬠Jack said, which was the closest he was going to come to an apology while the dowager was staring him down. ââ¬Å"You were his mother's sister, weren't you?â⬠the dowager said. Mary looked a bit baffled at the sudden change of topic. ââ¬Å"I am.â⬠ââ¬Å"Were you present at her wedding?â⬠ââ¬Å"I was not.â⬠Jack turned to her in surprise. ââ¬Å"You weren't?â⬠ââ¬Å"No. I could not attend. I was in confinement.â⬠She gave Jack a rueful look. ââ¬Å"I never told you. It was a stillbirth.â⬠Her face softened. ââ¬Å"Just one of the reasons I was so happy to have you.â⬠ââ¬Å"We shall make for the church in the morning,â⬠the dowager announced, uninterested in Mary's obstetrical history. ââ¬Å"First thing. We shall find the papers and be done with it.â⬠ââ¬Å"The papers?â⬠Mary echoed. ââ¬Å"Proof of the marriage,â⬠the dowager bit off. She looked upon Mary with icy condescension, then dismissed her with a flick of her head, adding, ââ¬Å"Are you daft?â⬠It was a good thing Thomas pulled her back, because Jack would have gone for her throat. ââ¬Å"Louise was not married in the Butlersbridge church,â⬠Mary said. ââ¬Å"She was married at Maguiresbridge. In County Fermanagh, where we grew up.â⬠ââ¬Å"How far is that?â⬠the dowager demanded, trying to yank her arm free of Thomas's grasp. ââ¬Å"Twenty miles, your grace.â⬠The dowager muttered something quite unpleasant. Jack could not make out the exact words, but Mary blanched. She turned to him with an expression nearing alarm. ââ¬Å"Jack? What is this all about? Why do you need proof of your mother's marriage?â⬠He looked at Grace, who was standing a bit behind his aunt. She offered him a tiny nod of encouragement, and he cleared his throat and said, ââ¬Å"My father was her son.â⬠Mary looked over at the dowager in shock. ââ¬Å"Your fatherâ⬠¦John Cavendish, you meanâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Thomas stepped forward. ââ¬Å"May I intercede?â⬠Jack felt exhausted. ââ¬Å"Please do.â⬠ââ¬Å"Mrs. Audley,â⬠Thomas said, with more dignity and collection than Jack could ever have imagined, ââ¬Å"if there is proof of your sister's marriage, then your nephew is the true Duke of Wyndham.â⬠ââ¬Å"The true Duke of ââ¬â â⬠Mary covered her mouth in shock. ââ¬Å"No. It's not possible. I remember him. Mr. Cavendish. He was ââ¬â â⬠She waved her arms in the air as if trying to describe him with gestures. Finally, after several attempts at a more verbal explanation, she said, ââ¬Å"He would not have kept such a thing from us.â⬠ââ¬Å"He was not the heir at the time,â⬠Thomas told her, ââ¬Å"and had no reason to believe he would become so.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, my heavens. But if Jack is the duke, then you ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Are not,â⬠he finished wryly. ââ¬Å"I am sure you can imagine our eagerness to have this settled.â⬠Mary stared at him in shock. And then at Jack. And then looked as if she very much wanted to sit down. ââ¬Å"I am standing in the hall,â⬠the dowager announced haughtily. ââ¬Å"Don't be rude,â⬠Thomas chided. ââ¬Å"She should have seen to ââ¬â ââ¬Å" Thomas shifted his grip on her arm and yanked her forward, brushing right past Jack and his aunt. ââ¬Å"Mrs. Audley,â⬠he said, ââ¬Å"we are most grateful for your hospitality. All of us.â⬠Mary nodded gratefully and turned to the butler. ââ¬Å"Wimpole, would you ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Of course, ma'am,â⬠he said, and Jack had to smile as he moved away. No doubt he was rousing the housekeeper to have her prepare the necessary bedrooms. An Incident That Changed My Life Essay
I admire a lot of people but the person I admire the most is my sister Rufaro .She has come to be the most important person in my life. There is no reason for me to live without her by my side. Rufaro is a nurse. She loves to help other because she says it was always her dream ever since she was a child. She works hard and she likes to learn something new every day. She leads a wonderful family life; she is always cheerful and happy. My sister has now been married for about 5 years and is a great mother to all her three children .She takes care of her family and still manages to find time for us. I just do not know where she gets that strength from. I admire her because she is very intelligent, ambitious and she has many goals in her life. My sister has a great enthusiasm about life that it becomes infectious when she is around other people .She also is a wonderful counselor and friend, very patient, sensitive and warm-hearted. She knows answers to almost every question, even those very silly ones. She is wise, patient and, sensible; she even helps others to solve their problems. She is also great fun to be with as she has a great sense of humor. Believe me; everybody who knows her says that about her. Even though Rufaro is younger than me in age, she is very important to me, because she teaches me to be a better person every day. She is an example to me and I love her for many more reasons. The forward thrust force is created by movement of the caudal (tail) fin and varying amounts of the surrounding muscle (up to the entire body for fish that swim similar to eels) in an undulating motion. The importance of this mechanism manifests itself in the fact that 80% of a fish's body is composed of muscle used for propulsion and maneuvering. Since fish live in an environment in which they need to move in three dimensions, buoyancy plays a significant role in determining a fish's ability to swim efficiently. Fish use a couple of different strategies to solve this problem. Denser fish use their pectoral fins to create dynamic lift, similar to planes and birds. ââ¬ÅThe structure of business management and organizationââ¬Â
Modern business requires modern management and this means well trained managers. Even today, most people undertake their first management position with little or no formal training.à As a result, they adopt the styles by themselves were managed.à Too often this perpetuates poor or discredited management techniques which have no place in todayââ¬â¢s world. With few exceptions, the majority of managers find the most difficult aspect of their job is the management of people, who after all the most important resource of any organization. A form of management began when man first employed others to work for him.à In those early days, the relationship between employer and employee wasà master and servant or landlord and serf.à Workers were treated as chattels and motivation was based on the simple principle ââ¬Å" if you donââ¬â¢t work, you donââ¬â¢t eatâ⬠.à Some people seem to believe that things have changed little change. Managing modern organization, it requires a completely different set of skills, one of the common myths is that the manager, should be the best exponent of the craft skills with in the organization.à In theory, a good manager should be able to manage any department with in an organization with the minimum of adaptation.à What makes a good manager?à A good manager is one whose staff works with him rather than for him. Can anyone become a manager?à In theory, yes in practice no.à many people are unable or unwilling to adopt to the need of management.à People are usually promoted because they are good at their present job, they have been with the company for a long time, their age gives them seniority, they know the right people, and they happen to be in the right place at the right time. Rarely they are promoted because they will make good managers. As with most activities in life, you wonââ¬â¢t know how good you are until you really try it.à à Management is no different so you should learn how to do it before taking such a major career step.à Every manager has responsibilities towards him or herself, their team, the individual within the team, the company and task in hand.à This includes motivating staff to perform to the best of their abilities and to prevent demotivation, delegating task, to plan and to control the activities within their domain to ensure that objectives are meet. To take decisions and of course managing problems, not to solve them all, but to help the team reach acceptable solutions.à Effective manager, initiate and encourage ideas from the subordinates and developed the team.à Considering the resources in management group, à à the people, acknowledging their different needs, attitudes, abilities and personalities.à These are not constant and can change from day to day, but a good and a modern à manager in a modern organization can maximize the strengths and minimize the weaknesses. Time ââ¬â the most democratic of the resources.à Every one has 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, etc.à It is how this time is used that determines managerial effectiveness. Space- this is expensive and many work places suffer from alack of it.à However, much can be made of the space available to improve the working condition /environmentà and peoples behavior. Finance- all managers involved with budgets and expenditure to some degree.à Trainings specifically designed to deal with finance for non-financial managers are available. Equipment ââ¬â including desk, telephones, photocopiers and personal computers.à You should ensure that your team have sufficient for their needs, while bearing in mind that idle equipment is a non-productive cost. Information- ensure that all information received is given the right priority and used as appropriate to help the team. Their utilization will affect the team and the individuals within the team, so managing these resources effectively is vital. After understanding managerââ¬â¢s role and of course before trying to manage other, it is vital to know how to manage yourself.à I f you are seen to be disorganized, easily pressured, blinkered in your views, unmotivated, and subject to swift changes of mood, you will not win the respect and credibility of your staff. ââ¬Å"Healthy self-criticism and an abiding willingness to learn seem to me to be the most important requirements of any managerâ⬠HRH Prince Philip. Self management is not about the amount of time you spend in an activity, but about what you do during that time.à His quality that counts, not quantity.à Time is very easily wasted but impossible to regain.à Time spent on non-management activity is not necessarily unproductive time.à But could the time have been between use elsewhere?à It is very important also to learn and control emotions at workà Highly emotional people are often labeled as unstable, untrust worthy and weak.à None of these are traits associated with good management. Communicating people in modern organization is very important Good verbal communicating is a two-way process, the speaker gives the listeners the opportunity to ask questions and make comments about what has been said in order to clarify and query the statement. The objectives is to transmit a message so that it is understood by the listeners.à The art of effective listening is essential to clear communication and clear communication is necessary to management success. Understanding how people are motivated an organization is a task and action that require into a staff to undertake.à In order to be able to motivate them to do so, you must know and understand the needs of each member of the team.à Because of the parameters in which you operate, you may be unable to satisfy the surface needs as money or promotion. Therefore, you have to look for the subconscious needs that these represent and try to satisfy the person concerned by other means such as the need of recognition, we all need to be recognized by others for what we are.à Second, the need for respect, it is our bright right to be accepted and respected as an individual person or to the worker.à Third, the need for responsibility, by having a task, however small, for which they are totally responsible and accountable, this is best achieved by delegation.à Fourth, the need for reward, not necessarily in the form of money, prizes or time off.à So often, this can be satisfied by a simple but genuine word of praise. Learning to delegate is another task inside the management.à Good delegation will give many benefits to the subordinates, a valuable development, motivation, a sense of responsibility for the staff, involvement and of course improve teamwork.à This will take some of your management time to set up but once operating it, is simple to update and will provide with a very useful management tool. Most people work in modern organization, groups, whether it be an office, a laboratory, a hospital, the factory floor or a theatre, in order that they can achieve their respective objectives, therefore, they must work as a team to build and lead.à It is equally important that all work groups operate or not a group becomes a team depends on how they are lead.à Considering this, analyzing a successful team, identifying team roles, understanding leadership qualities and styles, and managing ââ¬Å"difficultâ⬠people is part of building an effective team. Building a successful team can be a slow process and requires patience and perseverance on our part.à If things do not work the first time, donââ¬â¢t blame the team, try again- you will get it together eventually. ââ¬Å" ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALLâ⬠. The most important, and be reminded that our life is full of decisions making, every day we make decisions, these decisions affect only ourselves or our families and many of them are made on experience.à All decisions contain a degree of uncertainty, otherwise there would be no decisions make.à To help overcome these uncertainties, we can apply the following steps: a.)Define the aim- clarify the reasons and objectives. b.)Collect the facts- obtain as much information as possible, relevant to the decision. c.)Examine the options- study a number of possible options, donââ¬â¢t rely sole on past experience. d.)Consider the outcome- look at the risk factor of each option and the consequences of a wrong decisions. e.)Select the best option- decide upon the option with the lowest risk factor which will still meet the aim. f.)Do it- once a decision has been reached, put it into action, donââ¬â¢t procrastinate. g.)Evaluate the decision- to proved to be right or wrong. Managers continually face assessing management problems in two distinctive categories; those related to work itself and those related to people.à Whilst the objective in both cases is to solve the problem, they are tackled in quite different ways.à When confronted with a problem, the first question to ask yourself is ââ¬Å"Is this my problem? If not, then should you really be trying to solve it?à However, should the problem be yours and you are the best person to find a solution, make sure that you understand exactly what the problem is.à Much time and effort is spent in business trying to solve the wrong problem. Addressing work problems is also important, these can be short, medium or long term.à Some are simple, others more complex.à Many work-related problems can be solved by you alone, while others are better served by involving different people.à Whatever the problem, it is good practice to have a clearly defined method of handling it.à Taking a systematic approach, a series of steps that need to be taken and questions that require answers before attempting to find a solution.à This will be follow; analyze, plan, execute and à evaluate.à Time is democratic, we all have the same amount.à It is what we do with it that really counts. Time ticks by relentlessly.à It is very easy to waste but impossible to regain.à The only way in which we can save time by doing something more quickly or by not doing it at all.à There is ââ¬Ëworkingââ¬â¢Ã time and ââ¬Ësocialââ¬â¢ time.à If we add to one we automatically take from the other.à The art is to maintain a sound balance between the two.à As a manager, you need to manage your time carefully, so that we can maximize its use and do not encroach upon your ââ¬Ësocialââ¬â¢ time. Before trying to manage your time effectively, we need to analyze how you spend it at present. So, time organizing to be applied.à List those activities that you do during the course of a normal week.à For example, paperwork, telephoning, attending meetings, dealing with people, traveling and so on.à Estimate the number of hours you spend on each activity.à Time allocation, to ensure that you deal with all of your tasks on time, it is essential to plan how you will use your time effectively. Your last job each day should be to list everything that you have to do the next day.à To innovate is to ââ¬Å" make changesâ⬠, to introduce ââ¬Ënew thingsââ¬â¢.à However, many people find it very hard to come up with new ideas, particularly to order, this is managing innovation.à Generating new ideas often occur when we are doing something quite unconnected with the problem, such as driving the car, walking the dog or watching television. However, part of the management time should be devoted to innovation, to help generating new ideas, explore all approaches without evaluation, switch from problem to problem, allowing mind to wander over alternative and apparently irrelevant ways of looking at the situation and write down ideas and thoughts.à Managing different types of interviews, an interview is a meeting of people, tow or more, face to face, to accomplish a certain known purposeââ¬â¢.à In reality, an interview should be confined to two persons. Good interviewing prepare by obtaining as much information as possible before the interview, ensure privacy, emphasize confidentiality, ask appropriate questions, listen carefully, observe the intervieweeââ¬â¢s body language, use counseling techniques to discover the core problem and encourage the interviewees to reach their own solution. People have first to decide that they want to change, then they must be encouraged not to be afraid of change and finally they must be able to see where change is leading them.à Understanding and managing change, changes to an organization are caused by both internal and external factors.à Many of these changes are unpredictable and, whatever, the causes or circumstances, invariably involve people. The way in which people react to change will depend on how the change is presented to them and how they perceive it will affect them.à The causes of change can be divided into two types, those over which as a manager have no influence and those over which you do.à In the first group are changes which will affect the whole company, such as relocation or a change in company policy.à These are often due to external factors such as the economy, environment or the law.à Changes which you can influence are normally those which will mainly affect only your and your staff. Managing stress at work, one of the main reasons why people are stressed at work is their boss and the way they are managed.à There is one way for an executive to manage stress.à He must stop taking for granted success at home, and begin giving as much priority in terms of time and energy to achieving success there as he does to his job.à Understanding the causes of stress, the most common causes of stress have their origins outside the workplace. A few years ago a list of activities which can cause stress was complied by psychologists.à It is based on a scale of 0-100.à The higher the value, the greater the stress.à Both positive and negative events can cause stress.à It is interesting to note that of 34 activities listed over, only seven are directly work related and the highest two of those will have a direct effect on your domestic life.à Although management as a profession only has a stress rating of 5.8, some managers seem to spend their time trying to push it as far up the scale as possible. People who experience domestic pressures often immerse themselves in their work in an attempt to forget these problems.à However, the problems are still there when they return home, so they will work longer hours in order to delay having to go home.à These increased absences result in still more stress on the domestic front.à It is a vicious circle.à Other stressful factors are; too much work, giving few opportunities to plan or priorities.à To mo little work, boredom and a sense of being under-valued and ignored. Isolation, most people need human contact and those who work alone can be stressed by a lack of communication.à Routine work, not being stretched or challenged.à Poor supervision, unable to become involved or use creative abilities.à No clear promotional structure, frustration.à Environment,à working in cramped conditions, seating arrangements, open plan office, too much noise.à Managing in a changing work place is also included in managing the modern organization. With this, abilities and skills of being a manager, managing in a modern organization, it has become fashionable for companies to adopt a flatter organizational structure.à This is achieved by ripping out the middle management stratum and replacing it with working managerââ¬â¢s at supervisory level.à These people are expected to continue with their specialist role, be it operating a lathe, selling products or repairing computers, and at the same time manage a team.à Although this means that people are promoted who may not have expected to be, it also result in a wider gap between the workforce and senior management. Whilst it is acknowledged that a proportion of those managers who have lost their jobs may have been poor managers, did they receive adequate, or indeed any, management training?à It is to be hoped that senior executives will quickly realize the benefits to their companies of having good, well qualified managers and reverse this trend before causing further damage to the morale of the employees.
